On December 3, 2011 SolSolution completed the first of many solar PV installations benefiting the education system.

Yours truly was on hand to witness the dedication of a 3.9 kW photovoltaic system at the Sudbury, MA location of Aruna’s Place, a private preschool focusing on early childhood education. The SolSolution business model is what distinguishes the company. Founder and CEO Dr. Soren Harrison formed SolSolution as a 501(c)(3) social enterprise whose mission is to simultaneously generate clean, renewable electricity and increase the quality of education in underprivileged schools. By making use of the solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) model, SolSolution generates net income that it then reinvests into the education budgets of low-income schools through its Solar Powered Schools Granting Program and Educational Programs focused on solar, STE(Arts)M, and green entrepreneurship education.

The SolSolution perspective on how to position a non-profit entity for success is another key reason for highlighting them here. Harrison’s concept of magnified philanthropy resonates because many in the nonprofit sector are realizing the benefits of utilizing the best practices of for-profit business development in a mission-driven organization. Magnified philanthropy occurs when would-be profits in a market have a magnifying effect on philanthropy and both are directed towards charitable- or mission-oriented ends.

Scott Graves and SolSolution connected in 2011 to provide the organization with risk management and insurance solutions for builders’ risk, property and liability coverages. Scott has been developing solutions for renewable energy installers and non-profit organizations alike and can be reached with questions at scott@smgravesassociates.com.

“Now as SolSolution’s operations grow larger with multiple schools asking to go solar and new sources of funding to acquire, SolSolution also realizes how critical it will be to have dependable insurance and flawless legal structuring to ensure that our social enterprise provides its services at the highest quality for many years to come. SolSolution is grateful to have the support and expertise of Scott Graves and his team to strengthen our core business. SolSolution looks forward to many years of close work with Scott, knowing that with his help, SolSolution can provide a bright future for our next generation.”
